The alarm went off at 7am, and when we opened our eyes, this is what we saw:
Oh my goodness! However, we were reminded of the adage:
"Red sky at night, sailors delight.
Red sky at morning, sailors take warning."
Our plan today is to explore the interesting towns west of Nice, most famous of these is Cannes, but also a few others. We rose somewhat early and had breakfast, but Rob was feeling a under the weather (more precisely, his vertigo has struck with a vengence, and he was feeling quite dizzy and nauseous). However, at 9:30am, we carried on and retrieved our car, set the GPS, and drove out of Nice with little difficulty. Our first destination is the town of Frejus. Frejus is not really of interest to us, but it is the starting point for a drive along the coast that is supposed to be unbelievably beautiful. We drove the inland freeway west and exited at Frejus, then we needed to find our way to the ocean to find the Corniche (that is the name of the coastal road). This was when the trouble set in. To make a long story short, we ended up driving around and around Frejus, somewhat helped by the GPS, but we realized that we have been driving around this town for literally an hour. Then, we learned that the coastal road is probably closed (landslide?). We can't read the signs exactly, but we're pretty sure that is the case. Furthermore, Rob is feeling worse, dizzy and nauseous, which driving through about a hundred traffic circles is not helping. We gave up on the Corniche and set the GPS to take us directly to Cannes, where we will try to continue our plan, but ultimately, Rob was feeling so bad, that we decided to call off any sightseeing plans and return to the hotel, where we arrived at about 12:40pm. Fortunately, our room has been cleaned, so Rob climbed into bed and promptly fell asleep.
So, there were no sights to write about today. Rob rallied a bit later and we went out for a little walk to the Place Messina (amazing modern fountain there, by the way, with a Bellagio style show, although on a much more modest scale). Then we went to a nearby Italian restaurant (La Loraine) for dinner (salad and pasta bolognese), then to bed early. We are hoping for a better day and better health tomorrow.
